Vienna, City of Music and International Business
Mention the Austrian capital of Vienna to most people and they will conjure up images of an ancient city with beautiful architecture, festive Christmas markets, or the home of Mozart and Haydn. This is certainly true – it’s a wonderful city with plenty to offer visitors, and has regularly been voted as the world’s most liveable city, as well as first in consecutive quality of life surveys, and which since 2001 has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
But it is also a thoroughly modern and dynamic city, home to numerous international organisations ranging from several UN departments to OPEC. In a global sense, it is well positioned for business, conveniently located as a bridge between the U.S, Far East, and Africa.
This year, there are several notable events taking place in Vienna. OPEC is holding its 6th International Seminar in the city on the 3-4th June, which will examine numerous issues relating to the oil industry and market stability. The IAEA General Conference takes place on the 14th-18th September, and, on a lighter note, this year the city will host the 60th Eurovision Song Contest, the annual celebration of European pop music and cultures which both entertains and exasperates in equal measure, and which can attract audiences of hundreds of millions globally.
