Formula One: The Season Begins at the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne
It may only seem like days ago that Lewis Hamilton secured his second World Championship at the final race of the 2014 season in Abu Dhabi. However, the close season is racing by and testing begins for the 2015 season on February 1st, ahead of the opening Grand Prix of the season – the Australian Grand Prix, at Albert Park in Melbourne on the weekend of the 12th – 15th March.
This curtain raiser is always popular and attracts big crowds, all keen to see how the competing teams shape up under competitive race conditions. Amongst the favourites this year will undoubtedly be Mercedes once again, however expect stronger challenges from Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren, who have all shaken up their driving teams and will be looking to make a statement of intent early on.
There has always been a great synergy between the Formula 1 community and the world of private aviation – perhaps it is the appeal one invariably has on a fan of the other – both being synonymous with speed, glamour, exquisite engineering and cutting edge technology. We however think there is more to it than this.
Given the race schedules over the season, and the global reach of the sport, with the Grand Prix band wagon heading from China to Spain, Monaco to Canada and Brazil to Abu Dhabi, to name but a few – it is unsurprising that the Formula 1 teams depend to a great degree on private jets to transfer equipment and individuals between race weekends in the most efficient and least taxing manner, allowing them as much time as possible to prepare for the next event whilst keeping key personnel fresh and in the best possible shape.
Beyond the Australian Grand Prix, the jewel in the crown of the sports calendar – the Monaco Grand Prix – takes place on the weekend of the 23rd – 25th May, and the season finale takes place in Abu Dhabi on the 21st – 23rd November. The British grand Prix, at Silverstone, is on the 4th – 6th July.
