Head to the Slopes by Private Jet

After a slow start that had many worrying about whether there would be any snow over the New Year at some of Europe’s best resorts, things have well and truly changed and for the ski enthusiast there is now plenty of snow across the alpine resorts in France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. What had seemed like a potentially poor season is gearing up for a busy Easter, and as always in the preceding months we have seen a spike in ski related jet enquiries.

All is not necessarily business as usual, however. With the Swiss Central Bank abandoning its currency cap yesterday, the Swiss franc has surged against the dollar, euro and the pound in the last 24 hours. In real terms, this has meant that a cup of coffee in Switzerland has become almost 39% more expensive since yesterday in some cases.

How will this affect demand? For those with property interests in Swiss resorts such as Verbier, a bastion for British society during the Easter skiing season, it may be a case of simply having to endure the hike in prices and living costs for the time being. For those who aren’t tied down by historical loyalties to any particular country or resort, however, it would seem sensible to look elsewhere and we suspect that France and Austria will be the biggest beneficiaries. It’s widely known that January can often be a testing month, with Christmas quickly becoming nothing but a distant memory, bills to pay, and the prospect of anther two or three months of inclement weather before the winter thaws and the first hints of spring can be sensed.

From the world of film we have the BAFTA Awards on February 8th, when some of the biggest names in Hollywood will arrive to sprinkle some of their stardust over Covent Garden and distract us from the more mundane for a little while.

And of course, London will bear host and benefit from another healthy dose of glamour, when London Fashion Week begins on February 20th. This is right up there amongst the biggest weeks in the industry calendar, when the great and the good including international designers, models, film stars and royalty come together to celebrate the best the world of haute couture has to offer.

It’s that time of year – the countdown has begun to Super Bowl Sunday, the Championship game of the NFL which will be taking place this year on the 1st February.

One of the biggest events in the world sporting calendar, the Super Bowl is not only the most watched broadcast event in the US on a regular basis, but attracted a global audience in excess of 110m in 2014. Looking Ahead In 2015: Oil Prices, Elections, and Private Aviation

The start of a new year is here and we are looking forward to what 2015 has to offer with interest. Already there are several themes emerging that we feel will have a noticeable impact upon our markets.

Oil prices have been falling steadily as the volume of shale gas coming on stream increases. Whilst OPEC countries maintain current production levels, it is unlikely that prices will rebound any time soon, with the price of Brent crude slipping beneath $50 per barrel this week for the first time since May 2009. This should have a noticeable effect on fuel prices – already George Osborne has hinted he expects savings to be passed on to UK motorists, and equally we have now seen the first private jet charter company in the US cutting fees on flights owing to cheaper fuel costs. This should be something that we see more of as the first half of the year progresses.

In Europe, problems are persisting within the Eurozone as uncertainty continues. Question marks over Greece’s commitment to its monetary obligations, driven by comments from the poll-leading Syriza party, have caused the Euro to weaken substantially against both the pound and the dollar. Although a snap poll this month should calm nerves if the governing coalition lead by the New Democracy party win the election, there will remain continued fears of a ‘Brexit’, the question of which will not be laid to rest until after the General Election on May 7th. With the ‘wrong result’, both events have the potential to cause major upheaval in currency markets, which in turn will inevitably have a bearing on the demand for business aviation seen across the continent, particularly during the traditionally busy summer.

With interest rates still at historic lows making it cheaper to loan and lease aircraft, the continued strength of markets in the middle east and growth in the far east – noticeably China, which some are predicting will see 10-15% growth in the sector, and latent demand in other large economies such as Brazil, there is every reason to believe that despite a few localised difficulties the industry looks set for another busy year.
